Penrose - the history of Sims Drive

Sims Drive area situated off Aljunied Road is an upcoming iconic lifestyle enclave. It features Sims Drive Road that connects to Aljunied Road lining to Sims Avenue. Sims Avenue is a one-way road linking Kallang Road to Jalan Eunos. The Road and possibly the area were named Sims in honour of a local Chinese businessman, Sim Kia Jan. Sim Kia owned a portion of land close to the area.

Sims drive sits in District 14 of Singapore that comprises Pay Lebar, Geylang, and Eunos. These areas have played a big role in shaping Singapore’s history. It houses iconic buildings and structures that reflect the unseen part of Singapore. To retain the district’s rich history, some of its cultural and historical elements have been conserved by the government. However, other parts are set apart to pave the way for the construction of modern redevelopment projects.

The nearby Eunos area was initially known as Kampong Eunos.

Today, the area portrays a blend of modernity and tradition. It houses intricately designed religious buildings such as the Mangala Vihara Buddhist Temple, and the Masjid Darul Aman mosque. About the tender for the Penrose site

The tender for Penrose site situated at Sims Drive has closed. The site attracted 5 bids with the bid from two partners City Developments (CDL) and Intrepid Investments of Hong Leong Group Singapore topping at S$383.5 million which reflects S$732 psf ppr. The two companies agreed to develop the residential condominium with a 60:40 ownership ratio.

A bid from GuocoLand came second at $655 psf ppr falling 12% below the top bid. Penrose site covers 174,648 sq ft and anticipated to house about 565 residential units. The building will comprise of 17 or 18-storey buildings.

Hong Leong Group spokesman commenting on the site noted that among the impressive attributes of Penrose site is the excellent connectivity. The neighbourhood is connected to other parts of Singapore by the Pan Island Expressway and the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway. The CBD and the famous Orchard Road Shopping Belt are also about 15 mins drive from Penrose. Paya Lebar Central and Paya Lebar MRT Interchange station is just one stop away from Aljunied Train Station running on the East-West Line.

Amenities are also reachable from Penrose with prominent schools located within walking distance. Some of the schools around include Canossa Catholic Primary School and Geylang Methodist School. Such proximity to educational institutions makes the location suitable for family living.

Other amenities such as restaurants and shopping malls are also within the vicinity. As a result, residents can enjoy the utmost convenience when accessing various necessities.
